#VMware vSphere Blog: NFS and the vCD Appliance

VMware vSphere Blog: NFS and the vCD Appliance:
Stephens-pic-small
Tom Stephens

@vCloud_Storm
I’m sure many of you have heard about the vCloud Director Appliance by now.   It’s one of the fastest ways you can get vCloud Director up and running to evaluate it in your environment.
The key here is that it is only supported for evaluation environments.  As a result, certain design decisions were made with this in mind.  For example, even though it is based on CentOS, only packages that were critical to its use are included.  This helps to keep the size of the vCloud Director Appliance down, making it quicker to download and install.
The configuration provided should be more than sufficient for most evaluation environments.   Every once in a while though, someone has a need for something that surpasses what the vCloud Director Appliance was designed for.
Recently I was made aware of someone who had such a requirement.  What they needed was an ability to mount a NFS share from within the vCloud Director Appliance.
In a production environment, customers often use a NFS share on the vCloud Director cells to provide adequate space for the transfer service operations.   When this person tried to do this with the vCloud Director Appliance, they quickly realized that they couldn’t.
Screen shot 2012-03-29 at 11.12.26 PM
The reason for this is because not all the NFS related packages are provided with the vCloud Director Appliance.  Normally, this is not a concern as the amount of transfer service space provided with the appliance is adequate for evaluations.  However, if you find yourself in a situation like this person was in where you need it, I’m going to show you how to get NFS working on the vCloud Director Appliance.
Before I do though, I’d like to place a special note here that this is UNSUPPORTED.  As you will have to install packages that are not included with the vCloud Director Appliance, that means that we do not perform any functional testing with these packages installed.    So if you do this, you are doing so at your own risk.
Now the process to get NFS functionality on the vCloud Director Appliance is pretty simple.  First, make sure that your vCloud Director Appliance is connected to the Internet.  This is required, as it will be downloading the correct packages to install.  Next, use yum to install the portmap and nfs-utils packages.  You can do this by logging into the vCloud Director Appliance as the user root (where the default password is Default0) and entering the following commands:
# yum install portmap
# yum install nfs-utils
After you do this, you simply need to start the portmap service with the following command:
# service portmap start
You should be able to mount a NFS share now, using a command similar to:
# mount –t nfs4 mynfsserver:/nfs_share /nfs_mountpoint
for NFS v4, or if using NFS v3 or v2…
# mount –t nfs mynfsserver:/nfs_share /nfs_mountpoint
That’s all there is to it!

#VMware vCloud Blog: Learn VMware vCloud Director on a Shoestring

VMware vCloud Blog: Learn VMware vCloud Director on a Shoestring:
By: David Davis
Just about the only qualification to learn about vCloud Director is whether or not you have vSphere knowledge, as vCD builds on top of your vSphere infrastructure. vCloud Director allows your end users or customers to consume the virtual infrastructure with maximum agility (that means it makes your life, and theirs, easier). Whether you are a vSphere admin at a medium-size company or at a large service provider, it’s the perfect tie to get started learning vCloud Director!
So how do you get started learning about vCloud Director?  Sure, you can work through the vCD Evaluation guide and other documentation. And, yes, VMware education has their flagship classroom (or online) 4 day class on vCloud Director (Deploy and Manage the VMware vCloud 1.5). But let’s say that you are just getting started and don’t have much money in your budget to learn about vCloud Director. What are your options?
Video-based training (or CBT) is the best option! It’s self-paced so you can learn on your own schedule. In some cases, it’s portable so you can learn on the go (on your iPad while on the plane or train). And, once you have it, your video-based training option is always available for you to come back to and reference when you are using the product (unlike most classroom training that is a one-time event).
Here are two CBT options that are available to users interested in learning more about vCloud Director:
  1. TrainSignal vCloud Director Essentials (1.5) – I spent the last few months creating a 5 hour Ddtraining1 vCloud Director Essentials video training course. I designed this course to give you a solid foundation on vCloud Director concepts/terminology and then show you how to install and configure vCD. It was enjoyable showing the two different ways to install vCD – using the new virtual appliance (for proof of concepts & labs) as well as the production method (installing Linux, installing vCD, connecting it to a database, etc). Once installed, I walk you through creating provider virtual data centers, organization, and vApps. And when you choose video training from TrainSignal, you get it in both streaming video over the web as well as a DVD for offline viewing on your laptop or iPad. The course was tech edited, and one of the videos (vCloud Director in the Real World) was created by Jake Robinson of Bluelock (a vCloud Datacenter provider). I hope you enjoy my course and I welcome your feedback!

  2. VMware vCloud Director Fundamentals (1.5) – VMware’s self-paced 3.5 hour vCloud Director
training is another great option that offers a base introduction to cloud computing and the vCloud architecture. It shows you how to analyze your license needs, how to configure vSphere and cloud resources, and how to create and manage vCloud Director networks. It’s broken down into 6 modules – overview, architecture & components, installation & configuration, administration, networking, and user administration.
Additionally, VMware Education has a couple of CBT courses available that are based on vCloud Director 1.0. They are:
Now is the time to start learning about vCloud Director (and other vCloud components). vCloud Director continues to improve and be adopted by providers and enterprises around the world. It’s likely that VMware will soon have a certification around vCloud Director (a partner competency is already in beta) and your enterprise could really take advantage of what infrastructure clouds can provide. Get started today!

#Best Buy Geek Squad Preps #Cloud Services From #mindSHIFT

Best Buy Geek Squad Preps Cloud Services From mindSHIFT:
At Best Buy (symbol: BBY), the retailer’s Geek Squad business is preparing to launch a managed services partner program targeting the SMB market. Longer term, Geek Squad also is preparing to offer SMBs such potential cloud services as hosted Exchange, hosted SharePoint, ActiveSync, cloud-based backup and hosted desktops.
Although yet to be officially announced, the Geek Squad cloud services for small business customers will involve a closer working relationship between Geek Squad and mindSHIFT — an MSP and cloud services provider that Best Buy acquired in 2011.
Geek Squad this week is expected to announce its managed services partner program at the Channel Partners conference in Las Vegas. But longer term, Geek Squad will tap into mindSHIFT to push into cloud services, noted Al Afflitto, a strategic partnerships manager at Best Buy and Geek Squad. Afflito did not mention a potential launch date or timing for the potential Geek Squad cloud services.
For small VARs and MSPs, the market for horizontal SaaS applications — hosted email, collaboration, etc. — is becoming increasingly crowded. And it might be difficult for small channel partners to match the pricing power and scalability of Geek Squad and mindSHIFT, backed by Best Buy. With those thoughts in mind, industry pundits are telling small channel partners to go vertical or to focus on specific higher-margin services in the cloud.
Still, mindSHIFT itself has tried to avoid pricing wars in the cloud. After all, Best Buy acquired mindSHIFT with an eye toward higher-margin IT services and recurring revenues.

#Morphlabs, #Dell pitch all-SSD private cloud

Morphlabs, Dell pitch all-SSD private cloud:
Morphlabs and Dell are making an all-SSD-based cloud architecture available for companies needing the fastest storage performance for their private clouds.
Solid-state drives increase storage I/O performance while cutting power consumption compared to spinning disk and other traditional storage. That means faster launching of applications and faster access to data, but SSD technology has been seen as too expensive for broad use. That is starting to change, however, and even some cloud providers offer at least some SSD options. SSD storage underlies Amazon Web Services’ DynamoDB database, and CloudSigma added SSDs to its public cloud offering last fall.
Although it’s on-premise, Morphlabs said its new mCloud service will be priced on par with Amazon Web Services, but will bring with it the security of a private cloud to service providers and other companies that require it. Many companies still aren’t ready for the public cloud because of data security and other concerns about shared infrastructure. That’s the crowd Morphlabs is targeting with the new mCloud, which sits upon a Dell converged infrastructure unit featuring the company’s cloud-inspired PowerEdge C servers.
The appeal of a private cloud — or at least a hybrid cloud that lets companies keep some applications and data under their purview — is one reason Amazon partnered with Eucalyptus, which will makes it easier for companies to link Eucalyptus-based private clouds with public AWS cloud services.  Amazon has announced several other services, including a storage gateway and workflow services, all geared to ease interaction between its public cloud and customer data centers.
As with any hot new technology, SSDs started out as a premium option. But as costs come down, expect to see them replace spinning disks more and more both in the cloud and on-premises.

#Xen 4.2 Release Plan

Xen 4.2 Release Plan:
Since early January I have been tracking the status of work left to do before 4.2 by posting a weekly roundup of the remaining blockers and “nice to haves”. You can find these in the xen devel list archives, posted most Monday mornings.
Last week I decided that the TODO list had reached the point where it was time to start thinking about a release. I made a proposal for a release timeline which was generally agreed to be a reasonable plan.
In summary the plan is as follows (see the list posting for more details):
  • 19 March — TODO list locked down WE ARE HERE
