Presenters at the first OpenDaylight Mini-Summit in New Orleans offered a first glimpse of the SDN platform architecture and the benefits it will provide in enterprise, cloud and service provider environments. Developers were in the booth giving live demos and we got great questions and feedback from attendees. Developers also appeared on the Cloudcast podcast talking about OpenDaylight and the SDN evolution, and Enterprise Networking Planet recapped the panel discussion asking: Is the Future of OpenDaylight about Applications?

On the Clouds, Virtualization and SDN Panel, networking experts from OpenStack and CloudStack discussed pressing problems in virtual networking such as the inability to provide customized connectivity between two virtual LANs within the cloud environment, as current methods don't scale and are fragile. Another key challenge is the inability to rapidly deploy and connect services (e.g. database, load balancing) so that full horizontal scaling can occur as demand within the cloud fluctuates. In An Introduction to OpenDaylight's First Release, Ed Warnicke gave an overview of Hydrogen and debuted three editions including Service Provider, Base and Virtualization, while delving into SDN use cases. A question was posed about the effect of OpenDaylight and SDN on network operators. The emerging coordination between OpenDaylight and OpenStack Neutron helps to bridge the needs of DevOps and NetOps and provides the management, flexibility and oversight that both require. An OpenDaylight use case was shared during the Network As Code presentation, demonstrating the impact that SDN has on network operations. An implementation being rolled out at the University of Kentucky uses OpenDaylight underneath OpenStack leveraging the OVSDB integration work within OpenDaylight. Full video >>
Two presentations covering virtual network support within OpenDaylight were lead by the Virtual Tenant Networking project and Open DOVE project teams. Both projects provide rich frameworks for creating and managing virtual networks. Anees Shaikh and Su-Hun Yun also provided their thoughts on how the two projects would more closely align and merge over time.
