Computer graphics geeks, this one's for you: Pixar will release its animation software for free

Pixar, the animated movie company behind movies such as Toy Story, Cars, The Incredibles, and many more, is releasing a magical gift of software to the masses.
This August, the company will release a free version of its in-house software, RenderMan, for free to hobbyists and students for non-commercial use — yes, it's just trusting you to not use it to make money.
RenderMan is the software that Pixar used to make movies such as Cars, Wall-E, The Incredibles, among others. It has also been used by other studios in movies such as the Harry Potter series, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight.
Pixar usually licenses the software for about $500, but it will be making it available for free when RenderMan V.19 launches at SIGGRAPH, an annual conference and exhibition on computer graphics and interactive techniques, in August.
Pixar created its RenderMan software back in the '80s, and even created its own computer hardware for it in 1987.
