HP adds Eucalyptus to Helion cloud portfolio alongside OpenStack

HP has announced a refresh of its Helion cloud computing portfolio, updating not only its Helion OpenStack build but also a new release of the Eucalyptus platform it gained when it acquired the firm of the same name last year.
Available immediately, the new releases raise interesting questions about HP's cloud strategy, following the firm's commitment to the OpenStack platform when it launched Helion last year.
Since then, the firm has acquired Eucalyptus Systems, a developer of private cloud solutions that are API compatible with Amazon's AWS public cloud services. This enabled enterprise users to operate a hybrid cloud deployment, where workloads could run on their own infrastructure or AWS, and move between the two.
With HP's acquisition of Eucalyptus, it was assumed the firm would use the opportunity to infuse AWS compatibility into the HP Helion OpenStack build. Instead, the firm has unveiled new versions of both products.
HP Helion Eucalyptus 4.1 is the first Eucalyptus product release under the Helion brand since the acquisition. It adds a number of updates including an AWS Cloud Formation compatible service that enables customers to re-use existing AWS application deployment templates on their private cloud.
It also introduces a web-based management tool, HP Helion Eucalyptus Cloud Manager, that can be used to create, modify and delete S3 storage object buckets on AWS and HP Helion clouds.
HP's Helion OpenStack 1.1 release also adds a number of enhancements, many of them focused on integration with other HP products or services. These include integration with HP's ArcSight for centralised logging and analysis of security threats; certification for HP ProLiant Gen 8 and Gen 9 plus HP Moonshot m710 and 300 server hardware; and HP 3PAR StoreServ HA integration.
Also announced is the HP Helion Development Platform 1.1, an update of its application development platform based on the open source Cloud Foundry project. This adds application rollback and versioning support, enhanced user management, and additional dashboards providing oversight of resource quota usage.
"The updates to the HP Helion OpenStack and HP Helion Development Platform, in addition to the first Eucalyptus product release under Helion, reflect HP's commitment to today's most important cloud ecosystems and work to create a hybrid cloud environment that can easily integrate into enterprises' existing IT environments," said Bill Hilf, senior vice president of Product and Service Management for HP Cloud.
HP Helion Eucalyptus 4.1, Helion OpenStack 1.1 and the HP Helion Development Platform 1.1 are all available now worldwide, the firm said.
