Seamless integration of NoSQL, object store, in-memory analytics, caching and search engineered to significantly enhance DevOps productivity

SEATTLE, Wash. – May 27, 2015 – Basho Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak®, the industry-leading distributed NoSQL database software, today announced the Basho® Data Platform, developed to simplify the operation and integration challenges of deploying and managing big data, Internet of Things (IoT) and hybrid cloud applications. The Basho Data Platform integrates Riak KV (formerly Riak), a distributed NoSQL database, and Riak S2 (formerly Riak CS), object storage software, with Apache Spark for in-memory analytics, Redis caching for increased performance and Apache Solr for enhanced query capabilities, significantly enhancing productivity for development and operations teams.

"Big data with multiple data models, hybrid cloud architectures with distributed active workloads and the rise of the Internet of Things require developers to integrate, replicate and synchronize information across functions," said Mac Devine, vice president and CTO IBM Cloud Services at IBM. "Distributed systems are at the convergence of big data, cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT). Basho specializes in solving distributed systems challenges, and integrated approaches such as the Basho Data Platform help ensure that applications are highly available, massively scalable and easy to deploy at production scale."

"Big data applications like ours need to integrate and then deploy many different technology components," said Martin Davies, CEO of technology at bet365. "As an existing user of Riak for its high availability and operational simplicity, we are keen to explore the Data Platform's promise to ease the complexity associated with integration and operations with other elements of our technology stack."

"We are excited that Basho is stepping forward and simplifying the daunting technology stack that is needed to support the data needs of our rapidly scaling systems that support our iPad point of sale application," said Jason Ordway, CTO of ShopKeep POS. "Initiatives such as integrating Riak KV with Redis and Apache Solr have the potential to ease our future development workload considerably."

The Basho Data Platform is purpose-built to simplify operations for organizations needing database scalability, multi-model support and seamless integration with complementary technologies. In a recent survey of Riak users conducted by TechValidate, more than 50 percent of respondents indicated that they are using Riak in multiple applications. The survey also showed that more than 40 percent have deployed Redis and an additional 42 percent are using Apache Solr. Responses to the survey indicated a widespread use of multiple technologies in supporting the data performance and storage needs of big data applications. All of these technologies have their own integration challenges and development skillsets.

The Basho Data Platform has been developed to address these challenges by reducing the complexity of integrating and deploying big data application technology components together. It includes NoSQL databases, caching and in-memory analytics, which are required for active workloads. The Basho Data Platform controls the replication and synchronization of data between components of these highly distributed applications and supports multiple database models including key value and object storage. It integrates and simplifies management of big data applications for use in public, private and hybrid cloud environments.

"Developers and operations teams struggle to manage multiple data models to facilitate big data applications using hybrid cloud architectures with distributed active workloads," said Carl Olofson, research vice president at IDC. "They need a unified platform that allows them to orchestrate and automate provisioning, monitoring and version control of applications that support these new technologies, and that enable them to integrate, replicate and synchronize information across functions. Integrated solutions such as the Basho Data Platform help address the distribution of data across application components and ensure that these applications are highly available, massively scalable and easy to deploy at production scale."

Basho Data Platform Features and Benefits

  • Real-time Analytics with Apache Spark Connector
The Basho Data Platform enables real-time, in-memory analytics with Apache Spark, featuring high-availability of data, easy-to-use cluster synchronization and Spark cluster management without using Zookeeper.
  • Integrated Caching with Redis
Enhanced read performance with integrated Redis caching lets users easily replicate and sync data from Riak KV to Redis cache. The Redis services managed by the Basho Data Platform simplify the current manual coding required in big data applications and can improve read performance. Built-in cluster management, high-availability and automatic data sharding makes Redis enterprise-grade.
  • Riak Search with Apache Solr
Brings together the strengths of Riak's scalable, distributed database with the powerful full-text search functionality of Apache Solr. This allows for transparent indexing and querying of Riak data values. In addition, there is direct support for Solr client query APIs, which enables integration with existing software solutions (either homegrown or commercial).
  • Simplified Operations with Orchestration Services
Basho Data Platform cluster management enables download and deployment of instances of Riak KV, Apache Spark and Redis. It allows you to auto-detect and auto-restart failed instances to ensure optimized operations and high availability. It eliminates the need for Zookeeper with Spark to maintain configuration information, naming and providing distributed synchronization. For Redis, easily shard data automatically between multiple cache servers reducing the time and errors associated with implementing manual sharding.
  • Simplified Development using Data Replication and Synchronization
Replicating and synchronizing data and indexes allows seamless data access and data accuracy, significantly decreasing the chance of data loss should an instance of Redis or Spark become unavailable due to network, system or other connectivity failures. It automates synchronization of Solr and Riak KV indexes and replicates and synchronizes data between Riak KV and Redis cache.

"This is a true turning point for the database industry, consolidating a variety of critical but previously disparate services to greatly simplify the operational requirements for IT teams working to scale applications with active workloads," said Adam Wray, CEO and president of Basho. "The impact it will have on our users, and on the use of integrated data services more broadly, will be significant. We look forward to working closely with our community and the broader industry to further develop the Basho Data Platform."

In support of the launch of the Basho Data Platform, Basho.com has been relaunched today with a new look and content showcasing the details of the expanded product portfolio. The Basho Data Platform will be available in June 2015.
