Introducing support for machine creation in a VMware vSAN 8 environment

We’re excited to announce Citrix Provisioning support for VMware vSAN 8!

Beginning with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 2308 and newer, Machine Creation Services (MCS) supports provisioning catalogs and machines in a vSAN 8 environment. Support for VMware vSAN 8 in MCS is now available to all the servicing options of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops.

  • Current Release (CR) –2308 and newer
  • Cloud release – What’s new
  • Long Term Service Release (LTSR) – VMware vSAN 8 support is available to both 2203 and 1912 LTSR releases on their cumulative updates (2203 CU4 & 1912 CU8).

For Citrix Provisioning (PVS), VMware vSAN 8 support is available beginning with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 2311. LTSR support will be added in the upcoming LTSR release and cumulative updates (CU’s) for both 2203 and 1912.

This enables both MCS and PVS to provision VMs on vSAN 8. Customers can upgrade their existing vSAN environment to vSAN 8 in Citrix PVS production deployment. Customers can expect their existing machines or catalogs to remain unaffected and should not notice any change in the provisioning behavior following this update.

Previously, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops provisioning services would create VMDK files with monolithic-flat format when provisioning machines used vSAN. Now, provisioning services will create VMDK files with a stream-optimized format for all VMs. This includes provisioning virtual machines on previous versions of vSAN. Note that existing machines provisioned with monolithic-flat VMDK format will not be converted to a stream-optimized VMDK format. Citrix has verified that existing machines provisioned in a vSAN 7 environment will be fully functional when upgrading to vSAN 8.

Citrix will continue to add further improvements to vSAN support. This will include the ability to convert existing VMDK files with monolithic-flat format to stream-optimized VMDK files.
